How to Install Shelf Brackets
Shelves are an important structure that you can use in every room of your home. They provide convenient storage options and will easily aesthetically enhance the look of any space. It is crucial that you properly hang shelf brackets—failure to do so can be dangerous and cause damage to some of your favorite objects.
To a newbie, installing shelf brackets may be challenging. There is much more to the process than simply picking a random spot and starting to drill. To properly hang shelves, you’ll need proper tools and hardware, pick the ideal spot, install, and test the integrity of the shelf.
Proper Tool & Hardware
Besides the shelf and the brackets themselves, to install shelf brackets, you will need various tools to complete the job. You’ll need a pencil, tape measure, stud finder, screws, a screwdriver, and a level.
Pick the Spot
Picking the right spot the first time will avoid you having a bunch of holes in the walls. First, we recommend narrowing down a general area of where you would like to hang the shelf. Pick the wall and at about what height you want to hang the shelf to begin. Next, we recommend using a stud finder to find where the studs are on the wall. It is important to drill into a stud, otherwise, your bracket won’t be secure. Once you find one stud, mark that spot with a pencil. Then repeat until you find the second. To make sure that marks are even, we recommend using a tape measure. You can use the tape measure to makes sure that the brackets are an equal distance from any walls or existing shelves.
Once you have picked the spot, you can begin the hanging process. We recommend that you begin with a starter hole. You can make this by lightly tapping on your screwdriver. This will make the drilling process easier. Next, begin drilling in the screw with the screwdriver until it is as tight as it will go, then repeat on the other bracket.
Ensure the Shelf is Properly installed
Once you have the bracket secured and the shelf placed on the bracket, it is important to make sure the shelf is even. An easy way to do this is with a level. Simply place the level on the shelf and if the bubble is in the middle, then you’re set. Before setting items on the shelf, put a small amount of weight—you can use your hand to give it a small push. This will ensure that the bracket was installed properly and can hold weight.
